Brookside Manor was built in 1994 by a local developer who sold it to Chartwell Retirement Living and renamed it Chartwell Kanata. In early 2023, the residence was purchased by us; a local family with more than 30 years of senior living and renovation experience. Our plan is to create an affordable continuum of care for seniors living in Ottawa’s West End without compromising on care, support, service, or hospitality. We’ve done this by assembling a team of highly experienced senior living professionals and introducing best practices from our many years of experience. As a result, we’re creating a unique and genuine community where our residents are treated like family.
I am so proud that we have created a community that offers a unique experience for the area’s seniors. Being a local owner-operator allows us to implement some of the best industry practices as well as call upon eldercare leaders in the community for advice and support as needed.
When it comes to resident care, I believe strongly in compassion vs transaction. Hospitality, value, and resident-centred services are also our core values. This is what we strive for each and every day.

All of these services are included in our base price. Unlike many retirement homes that charge extra for essential supports, we believe certain services should be included to ensure an optimal level of health and wellness for every resident.
Our Assisted Living program offers a personalized approach to care, ranging from light assistance to more comprehensive support. We work closely with residents and families and collaborate with Ontario Health at Home to ensure optimal services and a customized plan of care that reflects each resident’s preferences and needs.
Prior to moving into Brookside, residents and families meet with our Director of Care to complete a preliminary care plan—together. A follow-up meeting is scheduled 3–4 weeks after move-in to review what is working well and identify any areas for improvement. Ongoing care plan reviews occur every six months, or sooner if needed.
Communication is key, and as an independently operated, non-corporate residence, our approach remains flexible, responsive, and centered on each individual.
Located on our second floor, The Meadows is ideal for residents who require additional physical or cognitive supervision, particularly overnight. Our dedicated Den Mom plays a central role in supporting residents’ overall health and well-being—both physically and emotionally—each day.
Through a vibrant, relationship-centered approach to care, meals, and activities, the Den Mom provides consistent encouragement and reassurance to residents, families, and staff alike. Every resident in The Meadows is automatically enrolled in our Sparks Program, a regularly scheduled small-group recreational therapy program designed to promote cognitive, physical, and emotional well-being through fun, coordinated activities.
The Meadows is a place where seniors and their families want to be—not a place they have to be.

The Brookside Spark Program is an exclusive recreation therapy experience designed to ignite engagement and spark confidence in a calm, supportive setting. Residents are thoughtfully assigned a consistent day and time each week, creating a predictable routine that encourages comfort, familiarity, and success. We recognize that some individuals thrive best in smaller groups where activities are guided with patience and respect for each resident’s abilities. Led by a warm, engaging facilitator, each session features interactive stations that gently spark brain health, dexterity, physical movement, and joy—meeting residents where they are and celebrating what they can do.

Our chef-prepared meals offer a variety of choices to suit a wide range of tastes and preferences. We are also happy to accommodate a variety of dietary needs, ensuring meals are both enjoyable and nourishing for every resident.
We have two dedicated Activity Coordinators who keep residents engaged and active each day. From fitness and social programs to hobbies and creative pursuits, we strive to offer variety that sparks all interests. Our goal is always to create meaningful moments—and sometimes that simply means being a little silly and sharing genuine laughter and smiles.
